What you need After you adopt

Training

There are many books on the training of pets. Some pet stores also offer classes for new pet owners on how to train their new pets (such as Petco). Try to be patient as  this is all new to you and your pet!

How do I find a vet who will help me care for my new pet?

You can get recommendations from other pet owners, a pet store or just go to a local veterinary hospital.

Exercise

Your pet will need exercise in order to stay healthy and stay at a healthy weight. The amount of exercise depends on the type of animal, age and weather among other things.

Feeding

Your pet will need fresh food and water every day.

Cleaning

You will need to keep your animal and your home clean to stay healthy. You will need a schedule to walk your dog. You will also need to clean your cat litter or birdcage on a regular basis.

Prevention of fleas, ticks, heartworm, rabies

Ask your veterinarian about healthcare for your pet.

How to prepare your home for a new pet

You will need to pick a place in your home for your pet to sleep. Your new pet will need a bed if it is a dog or a cat. You will need the correct type of cage for a bird.

You will also need containers for food and water. Make sure you buy the correct type of food so your pet stays healthy.

There are many types of harnesses so choose one carefully.

You can also buy some pet toys.

Make sure your home is free of hazards for your pet (for example, check for poisonous plants, chemicals, safety hazards like electric cords). Be aware that common household items can poison your pet (aspirin, detergents, bleach, insecticides).

You can get advice from your local pet store or veterinarian about what supplies you need.

Importance of spaying or neutering your pet to reduce the number of unwanted animals

Don't forget to spay or neuter your pet. You don't want to bring more unwanted animals into the world.

Know the schedule for wellness checks and dental care

Ask your veterinarian for a schedule of check ups, shots and what is needed for dental care.

How to recognize that the pet is sick?

Depending on the animal, it may become sluggish. There may be some mucous discharge or coughing.

How to deal with aggression?

You are responsible if he/she injures another person or animal. If you are seeing problems with aggression, please contact your veterinarian or pet store for advice.
