Adopting a pet is a big decision.

Before you adopt, think about why you would like a pet. You may want one for companionship, fun for kids and adults, protection, or a service dog for the blind or disabled. Think about it carefully because it is a big responsibility but can also bring lots of joy to you and your family.

It is important to be informed so you know what you are getting into. You don’t want to adopt a pet and then have to give it up. It may then need to be euthanized and nobody wants that.

What kind of pet are you thinking about? There are so many choices in pets like dog, cat, parakeet, fish or more exotic such as Japanese Chickens or Miniature or Teacup Pigs. What would be a good fit for your family and lifestyle? Know all the pros and cons of adopting different types of animals. Please consider adopting a shelter animal.

Do your homework. Talk to pet owners, friends, pet stores, animal shelters and various professionals like vets or groomers to get as much information as you can about what might be a good pet for you. There is also a lot of information on the internet.

Never adopt a pet on a whim. Think about if you are willing to take care of the pet for the rest of its life.

Remember to spay or neuter your pet to reduce the number of unwanted animals in the world. Spayed and neutered pets live longer and healthier lives and are generally more docile.
