Exotic Pets
There are many types of pets you can consider to adopt. It is important to do your research and make sure the pet you select will be a good fit for your family and lifestyle. Speak with your vet before adopting any exotic pets.
You may want to avoid pets that need to be in cages for their lifetimes like mice, guinea pigs, and hamsters. Think about it, would you want to live in a cage your whole life?
Japanese Chickens?
Baby chicks may be adorable but they grow up fast into chickens. Asian chickens have been bred to have very beautiful plumage. However, they can become aggressive if not raised properly. They generally need to live with at least 5 other chickens to stay healthy. They may be best kept outdoors. You need to check if they are legal to own in your area.
Mini-pot belly, micro or Tea Cup Pigs?
These pets have become increasingly fashionable over the last years. Some celebrities also are adopting them. Often, though, they can grow to 40 or 50 lbs. or even 100 lbs. at which point they are often abandoned. Owners sometimes do not neuter them so they can become aggressive. Owning them may also be illegal in your area if they are considered "livestock".
Ferrets?
Ferrets may be adorable and very intelligent but have their drawbacks, as well. They can smell and are difficult to walk. They poop a lot. They need a lot of playtime. They also may bite. Keeping them caged for long periods of time is cruel, just like it would be cruel to cage a dog.
